Apply for Drawing with the Wondering Artist 2023

The best art the world has ever had is but the impress left by men and women who have thought less about making great art than of living full and completely with all their faculties in the enjoyment of full play” Robert Henri, artist and educator"
Hi there.  Amazing to think the online course, "Drawing with the Wondering artist" is now into its 7th year! With the added spin-off of quite a few Art Wonderers returning to the course, it has become so much more than a drawing course. The Art Wonderers gather, from a multiplicity of spaces around the globe.  Each group of Wonderers uses the grid to get off the grid, to wonder, explore and make stuff together. The course takes on a life and energy of its own fuelled by the curiosity, input and mutual support of everyone there.

Interested?  I am launching the second  2023 course right now so get in touch.

Why not tune in over seven weeks in a small group, prompted by six big ideas and a multitude of images and artists throughout art history - all about drawing in its broadest and most infinite sense including Collage, Painting, Mixed Media - a new project delivered to your inbox weekly.

Remember -The Art Wonderers only requires 40 min a week online for our group chat. Lots of support and sharing of images and ideas happens through the week on your group's facebook group and/or whatsapp. And you can have a 30 minute one on one with me during the week.  We can decide on the group chat day, once the group is finalised - and to accommodate time zones.
Please note it has now evolved into an 8 week course.

Want to do something creative?   Do you have a dream to write a book, start a painting, make a coat, design a garden?  Or perhaps you are wanting to think about your life and the world in a new way? Or you are on a creative path but just need to check-in for a bit of extra support now and then?
Everyone is creative: discover what kind of creative person you are: scattershot creativity vs routine? Structured vs organic? Methodical or intuitive? Haptic or visually minded? This will determine how you like to make stuff, and also help you find new ways to develop your own creativity.

We'll take a look at some of the things that get in the way of creativity.  We'll help you make your own mark, reveal the language of composition and discover how to make images that sing!

3 Principles to live by for 8 weeks:
 Risk play enjoy
Bring a willingness to change your perspective, look at things from new viewpoints.
Be prepared to fail often. Make mistakes and know how NOT to avoid them.

Play and display
Here is a non-judgmental space where you can share ideas and the work you are doing when you feel ready to do so. In your Wonderers group you will receive the benefits of a personal art teacher AND a small group workshop drawn from an international community.
Once a week, a Skype session of approximately 45-60 minutes will be arranged for the group.
In addition to the group chat, I will be available once a week for a half-hour Skype session just for you.
Here you are free to discuss anything that might have come up for you in the week’s project, or in your creative journey.
A Whatsapp and facebook  group for sharing ideas or images.

Above all have fun!
Take half an hour out your day, turn off your phone, ignore your emails…just for you to PLAY! This course is NOT about painstaking pencil drawing, or creating perfect likenesses. This course is about getting back to the childlike joy of having fun with different and sometimes messy materials.
We all create differently so you can choose how you structure this into your days and week. Are you an early riser or a night owl? Would you like to put your half hours into one rainy Saturday afternoon? No commuting time to factor into your schedule but if you still want to get out of the house then why not take your art kit along to your favourite coffee bar and play there?
You need to dedicate half an hour a day for play or the equivalent over the course of a week (with one day off if you like).

Each week I will send you a project inspired by the work of a few artists:

Week one: Checking in. What does PLAY mean to me? Now? Then? Talismans of Joy- a self-portrait inspired by a poem.
Week two and three: Soup it up! How to fast forward failure.  (inspired by Andy Warhol’s soup can series, Basquiat and Banksy among others.)
Week four: Colour your world (Matisse, Morandi, Aubrey Levinthal)
Week five: Find the elf in the wall (Marlene Dumas, Cecily Brown, Jeniffer Packer, Gerhard Richter, Lee Krasner)
Week six: Dream on (Louise Bourgeois, Lynette Yiadom Boakye,  Paula Rego, Miro, )
Week seven: To love and to cherish (Frida Kahlo,  Grayson Perry)

2023 offer: 500 USD
Limited places available.
Course starts 20 August 2023

Here is what a couple of the Wonderers had to say about 6 weeks of coming together as fellow creatives, making and connecting through the world wide web.

Love that it offered opportunity for everyone from beginners to advanced & experienced artists… You could just start where you are and take it as it goes.
I loved the international component. That added the most amazing dimensions—global context encompassing different nations, geographies, climates, time zones and perspectives—so wonderful.  To encounter ....... strangers on the other side of the globe; to discover commonalities, respect differences and glimpse particular passions….  Fantastic.
Henrietta, Boston

I can’t imagine a better way of (re)energising/realising your creative mojo, and at the same time meeting and really getting to know a fascinating group of creative people from all over the world utilising the wonders of modern technology .
Can’t recommend highly enough – just do it!
Hugh, Cape Town

Who am I? A South African artist who has been living with my family in Istanbul, Turkey, since 2006.  As an artist, collaborations include secondary school art teaching, managing a tertiary art school, kick-starting creativity in an ad agency in Cape Town, and running the Art Spirit painting course for adults in Cape Town and Istanbul. In Cape Town I co-founded the Boudoir Biscuits painting and design collective: together we held exhibitions and designed installations, including the carpets for the judges' chambers of the New Constitutional Court. Since moving to Turkey I have worked on a project called 'A minute or less' in which teenagers recorded their lives creatively on cell phones. I have also taken people onto rooftops in New York, Cape Town and Istanbul to speak, sing and dance.
I am fortunate to live with a family of creative adventurers. My partner Mark is a writer and teaches English literature. My son Tem is an Actor.
When I am not out in the world having fun making or doing stuff with other people, or on a ferry or train filling the pages of my notebooks, I get back into my studio on the Bosphorus to paint.
